Oops, I jumped the gun on potty training.

So I'm getting tons of (unsolicited) advice from people about how I should start potty training Matthew. So in a bid to get him used to things I started buying those Huggies Convertibles diapers, that can go on as underwear OR a diaper. Then this morning I read a newsletter I get through email about how my Baby Shmear probably won't be able to pull up his pants until he's about 2. So why am I bothering then? I'll still put him on the potty when I'm on just so he can get used to it and I can get used to his cues, but I think I'll go back to the regular diapers. Besides, you get more in the pack and they're cheaper.

  • We use the Huggies Convertibles too, but mainly to help us having to diaper him standing up. See, he hates to lie down to have his diaper changed, so we bought them and just yank them on. That way, we avoid the *meltdown*, the streak and the inevitable pee on the carpet!

BTW, did Matthew get another haircut? The pic on the main page - it seems like his hair is shorter than it was.

  • Hi Carrie! Yes Matthew had a haircut a few weeks ago. We just liked the other pic on the main page we kept it on there as long as possible. We think the new one is a hoot; he looks so darn serious about something! He'll need another haircut soon because now it's starting to come down past his ears.

So how do you handle a stand-up diaper change when poo is involved? Just curious how that would work.

  • Ben still hasn't even had one haircut! He has quite a bit of hair (now!), and he gets these little ducktails in the back - it is so cute! The back will be the first area to be cut, when the time comes!

Ahhhh...poopy diapers. It IS a challenge, but I have changed those standing up. It usually involves something good on TV so that Ben will stand still. Then I wipe him like crazy. It's risky - there's always the chance he'll sit down or his shirt will fall "down there", but with some practice, it works!

Ben's actually been pretty good lately in the diaper changing arena - he'll usually lay down to be changed. He normally poops on schedule, and the timing usually works out (i.e. he just woke up and is a little sleepy and will just lie there and drink his milk/watch Baby Einstein).

Geez, this comment turned out long - it's a blog itself!

  • I change Avery standing up at times too. Like in the van when the back seat is full. It is a challenge with regular diapers to do this but it is possible! Helps when they understand you want them to hold up their own shirt! LOL Child labour!
We have got him a new Blue Clue's potty seat and we are hoping this might get him back in the mood of potty training. Can't have him being 4 like his cousin and still not trained (mind you that gives him over a year!)
